Being the tallest observation wheel in England, ferris wheel London Eye appeared in the capital on the eve of the Millennium. Since then the attraction has become one of the most-visited places in London and the whole England. It settles on the South Bank of a river named Thames and represents a huge structure the weight of which is 1,700 tons.
During the process of construction, all the wheel's parts were delivered to the installation site by barges through the Thames River and then were collected right on the surface of the river using special temporary floating platforms. Once the process was completed, the wheel was raised with the help of a special system at 2 degrees per hour until it reached 65 degrees. The entire building process including transportation, assembling, and installation took as much as 6 years, nevertheless, ferris wheel London Eye was opened exactly within the planned time frame, that is to say, 31 December 1999.
Besides, the London Eye ferris wheel height is 135-metres. Simply put, the height is equal to a building with 45 floors. In the sunny weather, you can observe stunning views of London and its environs being there. Also, right in front of you or more precisely under you, you can see the famous Big Ben and Westminster Palace.
Externally, the London Eye resembles a huge bicycle wheel with 32 cabins, each of which can host 25 people. The wheel rotates at a constant speed of 26 centimeters per second and makes a complete turnover for half an hour.
The ferris wheel London Eye turns continuously, as the rotation speed allows passengers to enter the observation decks and get out of them safely. But for disabled and elderly people the wheel is stopped so they can slowly take their seats.
Every year, London Eye is visited by over 3 million people and is considered to be one of the most famous sights in London.
