The Famous Atlantic Ocean Road In Norway

Atlantic Ocean Road In Norway

The Atlantic Ocean road in Norway (Atlanterhavsveien) is perhaps the most picturesque highway in the world. It is located in a county in the northernmost part of Western Norway named Møre og Romsdal. The highway runs along the Northern coast of the Atlantic Ocean and consists of many roads and 12 bridges connecting several islands in an unusual way.

The Atlantic road is one of the assets of Norway. It is as if designed for tourists: beautiful sceneries, the ocean, changing pictures of different Islands, etc. What especially tickles the nerves is the bridges that may resemble roller coasters when passing through them. And if you catch windy weather, you may even see the waves of the ocean the bridges lie through hitting the road.

The road or highway, Atlantic Ocean Road is part of the 36-kilometre long national tourist route No. 64. It is a two-lane highway that connects a small island in the Atlantic Ocean located between towns Molde and Kristiansund.

The length of the highway is nearly 8.5 kilometers and consists of several roads and short bridges carrying out the highway through many islets. It has been done in order to get to any of them in the shortest time possible. In the past, approximately up to the middle of the 1970s, cars were transported only by a car ferry sailing between Romsdalen valley and Avery Island. But this method turned out to be quite slow, so it was decided to build the highway.

The road planning began in 1970, but only on August 1, 1983, the construction began. Although it was not easy, as the process was all the time exposed to the natural elements (for six years of its construction, the road experienced 12 powerful hurricanes), but on July 7, 1989 it was opened, and today the Atlantic Ocean road in Norway has paid off itself and is free of charge (the highway was paid until June of 1999).

One of the main attractions of the road in Norway is Storseisundet bridge or as they call it "Drunk Bridge." The name came from the bridge's zing zag form.  Also, it is the highest point of the entire route. The bridge is raised to a height of 23 meters above the water.
